Exploring Walton’s secret backwaters

Exploring Walton’s secret backwaters

This site contains photos and writing of mine while walking around and floating on the backwaters in Walton on the Naze. All the words and pictures are by me.

I am inspired by the location and have been photographing around there for a number of years. I want to share those images and some of my thoughts in this site. There will be some site-specific reflection, some short walks and some meanders floating along the backwater creeks. While I appreciate the writings of various coastal authors entranced by these liminal spaces, there will not be any lighting out along a 100 mile coastline for me. This is an ongoing project and will be added to whenever I feel the need. Currently I am working on an exhibition of images gathered together from local photographers. It’s inspired by the Arthur Ransome book ‘Secret Water’, which was set in these backwaters in the 1930s. More on that later.

For now, the project starts with a walk from Walton on the Naze’s Mill Lane, home of the local yacht club, various fascinating local characters, and clanking boatyards. If you’re interested, do read on, and thank you.
